UPDATE: Massachusetts: MA Health Connector breaks Open Enrollment Period record for 6th straight year with 2 weeks left to #GetCovered!

I just received the following 2020 Open Enrollment report from the Massachusetts Health Connector (via email, no link):

Here are numbers as of yesterday:

  • We have 290,769 members enrolled in January coverage
  • We have 4,444 members enrolled in February or March coverage
  • We have 5,270 plans selected (1st premium not paid yet)
  • That’s a total of 300,483 people
  • We have 41,477 new enrollments.

I wish every ACA exchange would break out their numbers this way. Simple and to the point, but also with relevant details...not only "renewals vs. new" but also how many are enrolled for January vs. February or March coverage and even how many have/haven't paid yet! The last is a bit unfair since Massachusetts is one of only two states, I believe, which actually handle premium payments (Rhode Island does as well...Washington State used to but doesn't anymore).

Here's what's truly impressive: Not only is Massachusetts the only state to increase their ACA exchange enrollment each and every year for six years running, but they're already on the verge of breaking their record again for a seventh year:

  • 2014: 31,695 (major technical issues)
  • 2015: 140,540
  • 2016: 213,883
  • 2017: 266,665
  • 2018: 267,260
  • 2019: 301,879
  • 2020: 300,483 and counting

The MA Health Connector only needs 1,400 more to break their record again, and they still have over two weeks (until January 23rd) to do so, which seems pretty likely.

I should note that MA is also running a 94% payment rate for the 1st monthly premium, which is well above the ~90% national average.

Did I mention that Massachusetts also has the lowest unsubsidized ACA premiums for the 7th year running as well?

UPDATE: This just in...

I thought I might give you a nice Friday update to your post from the other day, eliminating the suspense.

  • We have 289,571 January enrollment
  • 6,325 February and March enrollments
  • 6,890 plans selected
  • For a total of 302,786

New enrollments currently total 42,837.

BOOM. Massachusetts has now officially outperformed themselves each and every year. They're currently up 0.3% over last year and counting.

This means MA has tacked on another 907 people in the past 2 days. Assuming this pace holds steady through the final deadline on 1/23, they could add up to another 6,300 enrollees in the end; if so that'd put them at over 315,000 enrollees, or as much as 4% higher than last year.
