Grim COVID-19 Data: Nightly update of the sick and the dead.

As I noted a few days ago, lately 95% of what I'm analyzing and writing about is the ongoing horror of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Since tracking and analyzing data is what I'm best known for...and since I'm mostly stuck sitting in front of the computer all day whether I like it or not these days anyway...I've started my own daily COVID-19 spreadsheet. I've added a big yellow banner at the top of the site which links to it.

Again, I'm not the one who compiled the data itself--many other teams with far better resources than I have are doing that--but I'm pulling their work together and adding some additional context, such as per capita info by state/territory.

I also include the partisan lean of every state, which may sound cynical or tasteless...unless you've been paying attention to the news of late. That's exactly how Donald Trump sees it; he's literally giving red states whatever resources they ask for (or more) while deliberately starving the blue states (or even some purple states if their governors aren't "nice" enough to him) or giving them scraps.

With that in mind, here's this evening's main numbers. Be warned, they aren't pretty:

Nationally:

  • 215,000 confirmed positive cases
  • 26,500 newly confirmed today alone
  • Over 1,000 victims have died today alone
  • Over 5,100 have died nationally to date
  • The national death rate has more than doubled over the past 3 days
  • Confirmed cases are up 50% over the past 3 days

New York:

  • 7,900 more confirmed cases
  • 83,900 total cases
  • 4.3 out of every 1,000 residents confirmed positive
  • 505 more residents died today...48% of the national total
  • 2,200 residents have died total...43% of the national total
  • Around 1,248 New Yorkers normally die over a typical 3-day period. 1,254 New Yorkers have died over the past 3 days of COVID-19 alone.

Other States/Territories:

  • Idaho, Puerto Rico & the Northern Mariana Islands all more than doubled their confirmed cases today vs. yesterday
  • The death toll over the past 3 days more than doubled in 25 states or territories, including the following (I've bold-faced the ones which were already in double digits to begin with):
    • Montana (from 1 to 6)
    • Tennessee (from 7 to 25)
    • Utah (from 2 to 7)
    • Rhode Island (from 3 to 10)
    • Alabama (from 9 to 28)
    • Maryland (from 10 to 31)
    • Guam (from 1 to 3)
    • North Dakota (from 1 to 3)
    • New Mexico (from 2 to 6)
    • Iowa (from 3 to 9)
    • Michigan (from 132 to 337)
    • Massachusetts (from 48 to 122)
    • Connecticut (from 34 to 85)
    • Kentucky (from 8 to 20)
    • Maine (from 3 to 7)
    • New York (from 965 to 2219)
    • Ohio (from 29 to 65)
    • New Jersey (from 161 to 355)
    • Puerto Rico (from 5 to 11)
    • Illinois (from 65 to 141)
    • North Carolina (from 7 to 15)
    • Indiana (from 32 to 65)
    • South Dakota (from 1 to 2)

I plan on posting an update like this every evening until this dystopian nightmare is over, but we'll see.
